With nearly 400 people in attendance, the 2007 Festival of Trees to benefit Challenged Child and Friends brought in more than $180,000. The event featured live and silent auctions of trees, wreaths, art, wine and jewelry.
For the third year, Dahlonega jeweler, Thomas Scanlin, owner of Studio Jewelers, handcrafted special jewelry for the auction. This year’s pieces were titled “Hugs and Kisses” and were a platinum and diamond necklace and set of earrings which not only look like the X’s and O’s of a hug and kiss, but also resemble the child at the top of the Challenged Child and Friends brandmark. The auction of the three pieces of jewelry Scanlin donated raised more than $33,000 for the charity.
The event was hosted by Bob and Red Buisson at their 75-acre property on the shores of Lake Lanier. The Buissons opened their home to some of the guests for the Noel Party, a special preview event. At the gala auction on the property’s barn, a four-story New England-style structure, guests were treated to fine wines such as Nickel & Nickel’s 2004 Branding Iron and Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville all donated by a generous member of the Board of Directors.
The art auction featured works by local artists Frank Norton, Cheryl Hardin, Ann Brodie Hill, Jose Portillo, Anita Elder, and Mary Hart Wilheit as well as many others. Philip Wilheit served as auctioneer. Some of the trees and wreaths, which were all decorated by local businesses and friends of Challenged Child and Friends, sold for more than $1,000.
The event’s sponsors were Coker Equipment Company, Maxine G. Kendel, Northeast Georgia Equipment Sales, Southern Realty, Carroll Daniel Construction, Data Armor Network (John Pudenz), Gwinnett Place Honda, Primerica, America’s Home Place, Beau and Mayer Buisson, Michael and Jennifer Gottsman, Hamilton State Bank, Longstreet Clinic, Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Tipton Construction, United Community Bank, Willis Investment Counsel, Dr. Kell Gallaher, DMD, and Service Master.

As part of the 9th Annual Hometown Huddle—a partnership between the United Way and the National Football League—the Atlanta Falcons visited Challenged Child and Friends, Inc. on Tuesday, October 9th.
While visiting Challenged Child, the Falcons were treated with the special hospitality that only preschoolers can provide.
The Atlanta Falcons and Challenged Child and Friends have long enjoyed a special relationship. Each year, several members of the team bowl with members of the Gainesville community to benefit Challenged Child. Funding for the services of Challenged Child and Friends is paid for in-part by tuition dollars of the families served. Each year, however, additional funds must be raised in order to provide the highly specialized treatments and individualized care that the special needs of Challenged Child’s students require. That funding is raised through events like the Bowling with Celebrities in which the Falcons participate and through United Way support from Hall, Dawson, Lumpkin, Forsyth, and White Counties as well as through the generous gifts of members of the community. |
